Christos Tsagkaris: Ηonored to share that the Boston Congress of Public Health has ranked me among their 40 Under 40 Public Health Catalyst awardees for 2023.

Christos Tsagkaris, Research Fellow in the Department of Orthopedics of Balgrist University Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:

“Ηonored to share that the Boston Congress of Public Health has ranked me among their 40 Under 40 Public Health Catalyst awardees for 2023. This award recognizes the next generation of leaders, activists, entrepreneurs, researchers, scientists, and others who contribute towards a more just and equitable world.

I first heard about public health literally at the first lecture I attended at the Medical School of the University of Crete, back in 2015, in the frame of ebola preparedness. A few years later I was given the chance to serve as a Youth Ambassador of the Association of European Cancer Leagues, an organization where young professionals are empowered to take health promotion initiatives for cancer control.

During the first months of COVID-19, a cascade of incidents and meetings including, but not limited to, our Students Against COVID movement, our stopless pandemic webinars with the European Student Think Tank, and the MultiPOD Mentoring program stimulated and diversified my understanding of the field. In the coming months, I was privileged enough to be selected for the European Health Parliament, become a board member of the Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC), and a co-founder of the Cancer Prevention Research Group in Greece (CPRGGreece). These adventures – I wouldn’t call them challenges – encouraged me to pursue a master’s degree in public administration with a focus on healthcare (Neapolis University Pafos), remain involved, and to the extent possible useful, to the field and – to my great surprise – be selected for the Horizon Europe Cancer Mission Board of the European Commission.

All these have helped me understand the world, and the meaning of health and healthcare, a bit more. They also gave me the skills and courage to move abroad and continue learning while working in high-level institutions. While training in Orthopedics at the Department of Pediatric Orthopaedics and Traumatology, University Children’s Hospital Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland, this public health journey goes on – oftentimes during evenings, nights, and weekends, which I am glad to share with ideas, projects, and colleagues, many of whom have become precious friends in the process.

Thank you to all those who have shared this journey and introduced me to public health in the last 8 years – impossible to mention everyone! Wendy Yared, David Ritchie, Ginevra P. , Yakup GÖZDERESİ, Yeva Margaryan, Beatriz Arranz Álvarez, Gevorg Tamamyan, Christos Lionis, Elena Petelos, Fernando Zacarías, Rafael Mazin, Marina Haque, MD, MPH, Ahsan Zil E Ali, Leah Sarah Peer, Maria Saridi, Jose M Martin-Moreno, Don Eliseo III Lucero-Prisno, Adriana Viola, Miranda Begüm Öztürk, Atanas G.
