Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Bridging the Awareness Gap Between Viral Hepatitis and Liver Cancer Prevention

Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026, Founder and CEO of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“As World Hepatitis Day (28 July) approaches, I participated in the The World Hepatitis Alliance webinar, Breaking Down the New Global Hepatitis Report, contributing to discussions on the link between viral hepatitis and liver cancer prevention.

The WHO Global Hepatitis Report 2026 highlights that 287 million people are living with chronic hepatitis B or C globally, with 1.3 million deaths in 2024 linked to hepatitis-related complications, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.

I highlighted the awareness gap as a major challenge, as many people remain unaware of their hepatitis status and its link to liver cancer. Progression to liver disease and liver cancer can be reduced through vaccination, testing, early diagnosis, and treatment.

Addressing this also requires stronger health systems, improved access to hepatitis services, and sustained investment to accelerate hepatitis elimination and reduce preventable deaths.”
