Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Remaining Overlooked in Clinical Research While Carrying the Burden of Cancer

Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026, Founder and CEO of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“African populations carry a growing burden of cancer but remain underrepresented in clinical research. Increasing participation in clinical trials is essential to generating evidence that reflects our populations and strengthens cancer care across the continent.

I was pleased to welcome my friends from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami at our center recently. Amongst others, we discussed Niraparib clinical trial for women with advanced ovarian cancer. Following encouraging results in Black populations, including African American and Afro-Caribbean women, the next phase of this research will focus on women in Africa.

The recent launch of the study at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria (ABUTH), marks an important step towards expanding access to clinical research and generating evidence that is relevant to African women.

As a long standing advocate for equity in cancer control, I welcome such collaborations that expand research opportunities for African populations and strengthen global efforts to achieve equity in cancer care.

The visit gave us the opportunity to showcase our work of over 20 years at Medicaid Cancer Foundation and restate our commitment to support this work, as a vehicle to improve access to innovation and better outcomes for women living with ovarian cancer.

Congratulations Sophia George, Matthew Schlumbrecht, Patricia Jeudin; Zaria teamAisha Mustapha and Prof. Ahmed Hamidu Umdagas.

I look forward to seeing this important study begin and to working together to ensure its success.”
