Behind every advance in cancer care, every new surgical technique, every screening programme, every improvement in outcomes, there are people. And the truth is that no health system is more resilient than the workforce that holds it together.
We talk a great deal about innovation in oncology.
We talk far less about whether we have enough trained, supported, and retained professionals to deliver it, and whether that capacity is shared equitably across regions and countries.
From mentoring surgical residents, to building training programmes, to working on global surgery and workforce equity, I’ve learned that sustaining people is not a “soft” issue alongside the science. It is the proper system.
The point I’ll be bringing to the table is retention, because training more professionals means little if we lose them to burnout, under-recognition, or systems that don’t support them. Recruiting talent is only half the task; keeping it is what makes resilience real.
