Zacharoula Sidiropoulou: Ensuring Cancer Remains at the Heart of Europe’s Health Agenda

Zacharoula Sidiropoulou, Senior Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist at Hospital São Francisco Xavier, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Join your voice to our voice and endorse the Larnaca Call.

Silence is not an option when lives are at stake.

Europe bears 25% of the world’s cancer burden while representing just 10% of its population. Behind these numbers are mothers, fathers, children, colleagues, real people whose futures hang in the balance of the decisions we make today.

As someone who works daily with cancer patients, in HICs and LICs I’ve witnessed both the miracles that adequate funding enables and the heartbreak when resources fall short. That’s why I’ve signed the Larnaca Call urging sustained EU support for cancer initiatives.

My conviction is simple:
Europe’s greatest cultural achievement is not housed in our museums or monuments , it is our unshakeable belief that healthcare is a human right, not a privilege, and that the true measure of a society lies in how it cares for its most vulnerable.

Every euro invested in the EU Cancer Mission today has the power to transform three million lives by 2030, but, only if we act now. Adequate financing is not just an investment in research; it’s a moral imperative that can determine whether entire generations live or die.

This is our moment to prove that when Europe unites and places sufficient resources behind a common cause, we don’t just fund science – we fund hope. And hope saves lives.

Together, we are not merely 27 countries funding research; we are 450 million Europeans choosing hope over fear, unity over isolation, and life over loss.

I urge my colleagues across healthcare, policy, and research to join the Larnaca Call. Join us in supporting the Cyprus Presidency’s leadership on this critical issue. Add your voice to the Larnaca Call and help ensure cancer remains at the heart of Europe’s health agenda.
