World Child Cancer shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As we marked the beginning of the SIOP 2025 Congress in Amsterdam, our World Child Cancer team gathered from across the globe -representing Nepal, Cameroon, Bangladesh, Ghana, Malawi and the UK.
From six countries, one mission: better childhood cancer care.
This morning many members of the team joined the session, “Pediatric Palliative Oncology Across Cultures: Empathy, Humility and Human Connection.”
This powerful Global Health discussion reminded us that compassionate care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity in oncology worldwide. As one slide beautifully stated,
“Compassion is empathy in action.”
Key reflections from the session:
- The Empathy Continuum reminded us that with true compassion means being moved by others and taking action to ease their suffering.
- The benefits are profound: higher patient satisfaction, better quality of care, reduced anxiety and depression, stronger communication, and even physiological benefits, from lower cortisol to improved heart health.
- We loved the metaphor of “The Compassion Building Blocks”, from human relating → seeking to understand → attending to needs → beneficence.
Across cultures, across continents, we’re caring together. Empathy + humility = human connection.
Thank you to family advocate Georgia Kokkinou for sharing her personal experience during the session, a moving reminder of why compassion must always be at the heart of care.”
