Violeta Astratinei: Diversity of Stakeholders Makes European Cancer Summit an Interesting Place to Start Changes

Violeta Astratinei, Board Member and Scientific Advisor at Stichting Melanoom, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Last week had the opportunity to participate in the European Cancer Summit organised by the European Cancer Organisation, together with several colleagues from MPNEurope and WECAN– Bettina Ryll, Gilliosa SPURRIER-BERNARD, Anita Kienesberger, Ariane Weinman, Natacha Bolaños, Rachel Giles and Teodora Kolarova.

More than just a high-level policy debate, what I appreciated in this meeting was the diversity of stakeholders it brings together — healthcare professionals, research agencies, public health institutions, patient organisations and patients, national authorities and industry, members of the European Parliament, and major EU initiatives such as Cancer Missions, ECHoS | Establishing of Cancer Mission Hubs: Networks and Synergies, and EUnetCCC – European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres — making it an interesting place to start changes.

And then, as a melanoma caregiver and patient advocate coming from Eastern Europe, who has personally experienced limited access to melanoma care and research, two sessions particularly resonated with me:

National Cancer Control Plans in Focus: Lessons, Challenges, and Future Directions — where Comprehensive Cancer Networks were seen as key to achieving equity in cancer care across European regions. Speakers included Tit Albreht, Simon Oberst, Marc Van den Bulcke, Yannick R. Romero, Ariane Weinman, and Jennifer Young, co-chaired by Yolande Lievens and Piotr Rutkowski, and

Bringing European Cancer Research to the Next Level: Cooperation, Innovation, and Transformation — with Annika Nowak, Brian Huntly, Hugo R. Soares, Gilliosa SPURRIER-BERNARD, Roy A. Jensen, Muriel O’Byrne, and Christine Chommiene on how research can better serve patients. During this session, I found out about the Green Paper ‘Optimising EU Investment in Cancer Research: A Strategic Framework for Better Impact’- which I share here. and the idea of establishing a European Cancer Institute to align research, improve scalability of research products in Europe, and ensure a fairer balance of research funding between European regions.

Proud of our MPNEurope patient advocates Gilliosa Spurrier Bernard– who has been volunteering for several years as Co-chair within the European Cancer Organisation, and Bettina Ryll, passionately supporting the work of ECHoS | Establishing of Cancer Mission Hubs: Networks and Synergies. And of course, looking forward to continuing the discussions with Hugo R. Soares from ECHOS next week at our MPNEurope annual meeting in Krusenberg, Sweden!”
