“At 90 years old, Vernon Bradshaw was diagnosed with stage one lung cancer after visiting his GP with a persistent cough.
Following further tests, he came to The Christie for specialist treatment, receiving 20 sessions of radiotherapy over four weeks.
Throughout his treatment, Vernon was supported by The Christie’s Senior Adult Oncology team, a multidisciplinary service designed to support older patients with cancer and complex health needs.

“During the cancer treatment, I didn’t think I would be able to get back to doing normal things afterwards. There were times when I felt like I could hardly lift myself.
They’ve given me support that I didn’t think I needed. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have got as far as I have now.
The Senior Adult Oncology team have made me feel worthwhile. Independence and encouragement are what they’ve given me.”
With support from an occupational therapist, pharmacist and specialist in geriatric medicine, Vernon felt more confident, supported and able to maintain his independence.
He describes the team as “almost like family”, adding that the support included his wife, Valerie, acknowledging the impact cancer can have on families as well as patients.”
Fábio Gomes, Medical Oncologist at The Christie Hospital, shared Vernon Bradshaw’s story, adding:
“Very proud of our Senior Adult Oncology team! This is why we should have more of these teams improving the care of our older patients with cancer. I hope to have access to support like this if one day I need it myself.”
