Sushmita Sen: How do we Close the Gap in Evidence Generation for Clinical Care of Myeloma?

Sushmita Sen, Global Medical Scientific Alliances of Oncology and Hematology of Roche, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“How do we close the gap in evidence generation for optimal clinical care for people with myeloma?

The last decade has witnessed innovations that are changing lives of people diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM). The evolving treatment landscape for multiple myeloma while great for patients also poses challenges around designing trials and generating evidence that is relevant for patients with high unmet need while also meeting expectations of different stakeholders.

Our trial designs must also ensure that the evidence generated is not only reflective of the real-world clinical care but also enables Equitable Access to the innovations.

At the 67th American Society of Hematology Annual Conference in Orlando, I was honored to be invited to speak at a multi-stakeholder panel to discussion on how we can leverage Real World Data (RWD) to close evidence generation gaps in MM.

Below are my two key takeaways from the discussion:

  • Partnership with evidence: to generate patient-focussed, representative evidence, we must find innovative ways to partner on data sharing, data standardization and data harmonization through Public Private partnerships driving outcomes that matter to patients.
  • Patient-relevant trial design: future trials designs must accommodate evidence generation through Patient experience data, pragmatic elements, and patient-relevant endpoints that allows representativeness of real-world patients, streamlines data collection and improves access to clinical research.

This discussion would not have been possible without the tremendous support and advice I received from Eva Flahavan Erika Schirghuber and Emily Semmel (formerly Tucker), MS.

My deepest gratitude for Dr. Saad Z. Usmani and the The ASH Research Collaborative in Multiple Myeloma for this wonderful opportunity.”
