Silvana Luciani: So Rewarding to Have Big Support From Canadaian Government with Jarbas Barbosa

Silvana Luciani, Unit Chief, Noncommunicable Diseases, Violence and Injury Prevention at Pan American Health Organization, shared Jarbas Barbosa da Silva Jr’s, Director at the Pan American Health Organization, post on LinkedIn, adding:

“As a Canadian working at PAHO, it is so rewarding to have such tremendous support from the Government of Canada for the various public health programs I am working on, for NCD prevention and control, cervical cancer and HPV vaccination, violence against women, rehabilitation among others; and to have the encouragement and support from the PAHO Director on these various public health programs.”

Quoting Jarbas Barbosa da Silva Jr‘s post:

“It was a very productive week in Ottawa, Canada, advancing the Pan American Health Organization’s long‑standing partnership with the country.

This week also marked the launch of Vaccination Week in the Americas VWA 2026 in Canada for the first time – an important milestone that recognizes Canada’s ongoing efforts to regain its measles elimination certification.

I had the opportunity to engage with Canada’s Minister of Health and the Secretary of State for International Affairs on ways to further strengthen collaboration between Canada and PAHO in support of health across the Americas.

I also met with Canadian public health authorities at the Public Health Agency of Canada, including Nancy Hamzawi, to explore deeper cooperation, particularly in laboratory systems, technical expertise, and public health strengthening that can benefit countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

In Parliament and the Senate, I shared PAHO’s role and underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation – bringing countries together to share information transparently so that all are better protected, both individually and collectively.

Canada is not only a valued Member State of PAHO, but also our largest contributor, reflecting a strong commitment to Pan‑American solidarity and regional health security.

I am deeply grateful for Canada’s leadership and engagement, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen this essential partnership for the health of all peoples of the Americas.”
