Sebastiano Mercadante: Palliative Care is a Medical Discipline, not an Alternative
Sebastiano Mercadante, Associate Professor of Palliative Medicine at University of Palermo, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“- Palliative care is a medical discipline, not an alternative or integrative medicine
– Palliative medicine should be teached in medical schools
– Palliative physicians should be trained in advanced departments with proper facilities
– Patients with incurabile diseases should be cared by a palliative care team in proper setting at any stage of disease.
– Patients at the end of life should be managed by a palliative care team.
– Withdrawning or withholding medical treatment are matters of palliative care, not of Associations with ideological drift.
– Intention of hastening death intentionally, even legittimate, is not a medical matter.”
