Rudra Narayan Swain: Social Media’s Role in Healthcare

Rudra Narayan Swain, Assistant Professor Department of Clinical Hematology at SUM Hospital MD Medicine, shared on X:

“When Healthcare Becomes Content

The growing ‘reel culture’ among healthcare professionals deserves some reflection. Social media can be an excellent platform for health education, awareness, and combating misinformation. But there is an increasingly blurred line between educating the public and performing for engagement.

Medicine is built on seriousness, confidentiality, scientific integrity, and most importantly the trust patients place in us during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. When clinical encounters, hospital corridors, procedures, or complex diseases are reduced to trending audio, dramatic transitions, staged reactions, and 30-second entertainment, we risk trivialising that responsibility.

Not everything that attracts views adds value. Not every medical topic can or should be simplified into a reel. And popularity on social media should never become a substitute for credibility, competence, or professionalism.

Healthcare professionals certainly have a place on social media. In fact, responsible medical voices are needed there more than ever. But our content should ideally educate before it entertains, inform before it promotes, and protect patient dignity above everything else.

There is nothing wrong with building a professional digital presence. The question is what we are building it on. Medicine can embrace social media without allowing social media to redefine medicine.
