“I am thrilled to share that our team has been awarded an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence dedicated to improving cancer survivorship in Australia.
More than 1.6 million Australians are living with or beyond cancer. As survival continues to improve, we must ensure that our health system supports people not only to survive cancer, but to live well.
This Centre will bring together researchers, clinicians, consumers, health services and community organisations to transform cancer survivorship care.
Our work will focus on supported self-management, the roles of GPs, nurses and allied health professionals, patient navigation, and measuring what matters most to people affected by cancer.
I am enormously grateful to our Chief and Associate Investigators, consumer leaders, emerging researchers, partners and collaborators who made this possible.
I am especially pleased to acknowledge University of Technology Sydney and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Their expertise and commitment will be central to our shared ambition to deliver meaningful and lasting national impact.

“Flinders University researchers will keep striving to change 10 million lives for the better by 2035 with the assistance of $9 million in funding provided by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) 2026 Centres of Research Excellence grants.
Three Flinders projects will focus on areas of urgent attention such as the long-term needs of cancer survivors, addressing male mental health care, and improving injury outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.
Flinders’ Professor Raymond Chan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) will lead a Centre of Research Excellence into Maximising the System’s Potential to Optimise Living Well with Cancer, which has received $3 million in funds.
This new Centre will improve care for more than 1.6 million Australians living with cancer by developing better holistic support systems that meet their long-term needs.
Associate Professor Courtney Ryder will lead the Centre of Research Excellence in First Nations Injury:
STRONG – Strengthening Transformative Responses to Overcome National Gaps in injury for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities – which has received $3 million in funds.
Professor James Smith will lead WellMen:
A Centre for Research Excellence into the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Boys and Men, which has received a $3 million grant to help address a boys’ and men’s mental health crisis in Australia.”
