Randall Kimple: Wilmot Cancer Institute Puts Listening at the Heart of Leadership

Randall Kimple, Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at UR Medicine and Wilmot Cancer Institute, shared on LinkedIn:

“I joined Wilmot Cancer Institute in early June, and I’ve spent a lot of the time since doing something that sounds easy and isn’t: asking questions and then actually listening to the answers.

  • What would make your day run better?
  • Where do patients get stuck?
  • What do we do well that nobody ever says out loud?

The answers rarely come from a meeting room. They come from a radiation therapist who notices a schedule isn’t working for a patient who travels a long way. From a nurse who knows exactly which handoff drops the ball. From a physicist or dosimetrist who spots a better way to do something and just quietly fixes it.

From residents asking ‘why do we do it this way?’ in a way that makes the rest of us stop and think.

I came in expecting to learn a lot. I didn’t fully expect how generous people would be with their time, or how much of what makes this place good is built by people who never ask for credit.

So, thank you. To the faculty, residents, nurses, therapists, APPs, physicists, and staff across Wilmot Cancer Institute and University of Rochester Medicine who’ve taught me something since June: I’m paying attention, and I’m excited about what we build next.

If you’ve joined a new team as a leader, what helped you learn fastest?”
