“First rule: Don’t miss the last shot.
The ASCO guidelines on palliative care recommend that support for family members and caregivers be systematically integrated into the care pathway.
The ESMO/ASCO Global Curriculum includes among the skills expected at the end of the specialization also those related to the end of life and bereavement, including support for families after the death of the patient.
There is a clear distance between what the guidelines recommend and what the training programs offer and which also closely concerns the sustainability of our profession.
The care relationship continues to question our work even after the death of the patient. Preparing young doctors for this moment is a training and organizational responsibility.”
