Puneet Sharma: Why Was October Chosen For Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Puneet Sharma, Founder and CEO at BraveHearts Cancer24x7 Foundation, shared on LinkedIn:

“A Curious Mind, A Meaningful Question: Why October?

I have always been a curious person. I love asking questions, learning new things and understanding the stories behind the causes I care about.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2026 comes to an end, one question made me curious:

Why was October chosen for Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Was there a special reason behind it?

As I explored the history, I learned that the awareness campaign began in 1985 in the United States as a week-long initiative and gradually grew into a month-long global movement.

But what touched me most was the WHO theme for 2026: ‘Every story is unique, every journey matters.’

As a breast cancer survivor and patient advocate, these words resonate deeply with me. Every patient’s experience is different, and every person deserves timely diagnosis, quality care, dignity and support.

Through Cancer24x7, I hope to keep asking questions, sharing knowledge and helping patients and caregivers feel less alone.

Have you ever wondered why October was chosen?

And how can we ensure that the awareness we create in October continues throughout the year?

Because October may end, but our commitment to awareness, compassion and action must never stop.”
