Prisca Githuka, Founder and Executive Director of the Pink Hearts Cancer Support Foundation, Chairlady of the Cancer Survivors Association of Kenya, and Board Vice-Chair of the Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations (KENCO), shared on LinkedIn:
“If you gave me $1 to solve a health problem, you would probably want to know what I did with it. Fair enough.
You might ask:
- What did you buy?
- Who benefited?
- Did it work?
- Why shouldn’t we ask the same questions about NCD investments?
Governments allocate money. Donors provide funding. Organisations implement programmes. Then we produce reports.
Somewhere in that process, we need to be able to answer a very simple question:
- What did the money actually change?
- Did more people get screened?
- Did someone get diagnosed earlier?
- Did a patient get the medicine they needed?
- Did a community get the information that could help prevent disease?
- Did people living with NCDs get the support they were promised?
For me, accountability isn’t about pointing fingers.
It is about being able to follow the dollar.
From the budget, to the programme, to the person.
Ultimately every dollar invested in health should have a story, and we should be able to tell it.”
