“Meet Sophie Gray-Gaillard, a 2026 Parker Scholar and Immunology PhD candidate at Penn Medicine.
Sophie studies how the spatial organization of the tumor microenvironment shapes the function of tumor-infiltrating CD8 T cells, with a focus on distinguishing tumor-specific T cells from nontumor-specific ‘bystander’ T cells.
Her research aims to identify the cellular interactions and molecular signals that shape these T cell populations, helping uncover why some patients respond to immunotherapy while others do not.
By better understanding how these distinct T cell populations function within tumors, Sophie hopes to inform more precise, next-generation immunotherapies tailored to each population.
