Phoebe Ongadi, Executive Director at Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations, shared on LinkedIn:
“October is officially here! Let the Pink Conversations begin.
But this year, can we call for a paradigm shift? Can we move beyond awareness and start talking about access?
- Access to patient navigation..so no one is left to figure out the cancer journey alone.
- Access to financial protection.. so a cancer diagnosis does not become a financial catastrophe for families.
- Access to early diagnosis.. and, importantly, access to treatment once a diagnosis is made.
- Access to quality, timely and affordable cancer care.
- Access to survivorship support.. because completing treatment is not the end of the cancer journey.
Because awareness without access is not enough. A mammogram without a pathway to diagnosis and treatment is not enough. A diagnosis without affordable treatment is not enough. And surviving cancer without support to live beyond it is not enough.
This October, let the pink conversations be bigger. Let them be about systems. Let them be about equity. Let them be about access.
Can we talk access? Can we talk patient navigation?
