Transforming Patient Donations Into Discoveries That Change Lives – Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre shared a post on LinkedIn:

“For two decades, the Victorian Cancer Biobank has been powering cancer breakthroughs by transforming patient donations into discoveries that break new ground and change lives.

Since 2006, more than 42,000 Victorians have generously donated blood and tissue samples, including almost 19,000 patients at Peter Mac.

The biobank now holds over 500,000 samples, including rare and low-survival cancers.

Led by Cancer Council Victoria, the network brings together five major health services: Peter Mac, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Monash Health, Austin Health and Eastern Health – working together to give researchers access to one of Australia’s most powerful cancer research resources.

Even small contributions have major impact: a single blood sample can support up to 24 research projects, while tumour samples often contribute to 10 or more studies.

‘Patients are very willing to contribute and research really couldn’t progress without them,’ says Ashley Rudge, Peter Mac Tissue Bank Lead.

And with 95% of patients approached choosing to take part, the generosity behind the science is extraordinary, with every sample representing a patient helping shape the future of cancer research.”
