Paulo de Castro: Investigating Catheter-Related Thrombosis in Cancer Patients at ESMO 2026

Paulo de Castro, Oncology Resident at Local Health Unit of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, shared on LinkedIn:

“Madrid | ESMO Congress 2026

It was a very special moment: my first ESMO Congress, and with a work presentation right from the start!

The ESMO Congress is one of the world’s largest oncology meetings, where science, clinical practice and the ideas shaping the future of cancer treatment come together. Being part of it, and hearing the leading names in global oncology share their work, was a truly special experience.

I also presented the poster ‘Catheter-Related Thrombosis in Cancer Patients: Early Occurrence and Identification of High-Risk Subgroups in a Real-World Cohort’ (3989P), developed at Local Health Unit of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.

Catheter-related thrombosis is a frequent and potentially serious complication in cancer patients receiving systemic therapy, yet real-world evidence remains limited. In this retrospective study, we analysed 360 patients with a totally implantable central venous catheter (2019–2023).

  • Thrombosis occurred in 24 patients (approximately 6.7%)
  • About 92% of events occurred within the first 3 months after cancer diagnosis, and 79% within the first 3 months after catheter placement
  • Gynaecological tumours and immunotherapy were identified as independent risk factors

These results highlight the need for better risk stratification and personalised thromboprophylaxis strategies in patients considered to be at higher risk.

A special thank you to everyone who took part in this project, and to GESCAT for supporting my participation in the event.”
