“Today, I had the privilege of delivering a presentation to the MedPanacea team on Cancer and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), highlighting the importance of integrating cancer prevention, treatment, infection control, and the rational use of medicines.
During the session, I discussed the biology of cancer, explaining its development from initiation, promotion, and progression to invasion and ultimately metastasis. Understanding these stages is essential for appreciating why early detection and timely intervention save lives.
We also explored the global burden of cancer, comparing the latest statistics from Rwanda, Africa, and the world. One of the key discussions focused on the striking disparity between high-income countries and Africa: while many Western countries report higher numbers of newly diagnosed cancer cases, Africa experiences a disproportionately higher mortality rate, reflecting persistent inequities in access to prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care.
Another important topic was the relationship between cancer and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). I emphasized that infections remain the second leading cause of death among cancer patients, making infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and the rational use of medicines essential components of quality cancer care.
The presentation also highlighted the critical role of palliative care, ensuring that patients and their families receive compassionate, holistic support throughout the cancer journey. during my presentation,I aknowledged Christian Ntizimira founder of ACREOL Global the pioneer of palliative care in Rwanda.
To bring these discussions to life, I shared inspiring and emotional patient and caregiver stories drawn from the latest WHO/IARC 2026 Cancer Report, illustrating both the challenges and the resilience of those affected by cancer.
Finally, I introduced the work of IHCRI-Rwanda (Internal Health Cancer and Research Initiative Rwanda) , sharing our mission to strengthen cancer prevention, research, healthcare capacity, and evidence-based practice while advancing equitable access to quality care.
