“Back in Johor!
As a Johorean attending the opening ceremony of the 36th Annual Scientific Conference of the Malaysian Oncological Society this morning, I got to sing the state anthem for the first time in 40 years! Just like that, I was back in the school assembly, flooded with sweet memories.
Later, I had the privilege of sharing my keynote on financial toxicity in ASEAN, reflecting on the financial realities of families affected by cancer in low and middle-income countries in the post-COVID years… when ‘free care’ is not truly free.
These insights are now shaping ‘low-hanging’ interventions that promise high returns to society. Wish us luck.
The rest of the day was pure joy. I was spoiled with food and specialty coffee at every exhibitor booth and, most meaningfully, reconnected with some very dear friends from medical school days and beyond.
More than a conference, today felt like a reunion and a reminder of why this work of mine matters.”
