“An essential milestone for medical oncology specialization in Africa.
Today in Kigali, the first class of the medical oncology fellowship training program at the University of Rwanda have finished their final examination. An integral part of the University of Rwanda Department of Medicine, this is a high calibre training program by all local and international standards. The three graduating fellows are the first locally trained medical oncologists in Rwanda and their impact on education, research and policy has already been felt and much more is expected from them including leadership and decentralization of services.
Massive congratulations to my dear friend -mentee, and now peer, the inaugural program director of this program Fidel Rubagumya. Indeed very proud of you. Massive congratulations to the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Rwanda for being the home of this pioneering program in the region. Honoured and privileged to have participated in this program from its inception to participating in the final examination of the first batch of graduating fellows.
We are hoping this will stimulate the development of more medical oncology programs that are rooted in internal medicine in Africa given the rising burden disease, the complexity of cancer medicines and the urgent need for stewardship of resources, achieving geographical equity and improving outcomes for all.”
