Nazik Hammad Reflects on a Century of African Medical Education with E.Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa

Nazik Hammad, Medical Oncologist and Professor at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, shared a post  by E.Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa, Professor and Director PIUTA Ibadan Centre, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria on LinkedIn, adding:

“As a product of an African medical school, I am very excited to participate in this AMSA (Association of Medical Schools in Africa) upcoming conference in Lagos. African medical schools have defined health care and health systems in Africa over the last 100 years.

Their role is even more crucial in this century. The graduates of African medical schools also defined health systems outside Africa as many of them worked as migrant workforce in Europe and North America and helped shaped the landscape of medical education globally.

Medical education that will serve the population health needs is what the theme  ‘increasing capacity and retention of global workforce’ is all about. Proud that my Alma mater University of Khartoum ( U of K) was one of the founders of AMSA.

The current struggles of U of K as a pioneer medical school at its 100 year anniversary in 2024 is a testimony of the challenges that public medical schools face in Africa today, decreasing commitment from MoH and ministry of higher education to public medical schools, shocks from conflicts and loss of infrastructure as we have seen since the conflict erupted in Sudan since 2023.

The future is still ours as students and alumni work hard to position public African medical schools at the center of health systems locally and globally. Thanks to AMSA leadership E.Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa for restarting the dialogue on the future of medical education in Africa and the world.”

Quoting E.Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa‘s post:

“The 4th announcement!

Promises to be exciting.”
