Nazik Hammad, Medical Oncologist and Professor at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“At the AORTIC conference in Tunisia last week, we discussed complex cancer therapeutic geographies in Africa during our session on medical tourism and cancer with Fidel Rubagumya and Omar Abdihamid.
Based on our research published last year at JCO Global Oncology, we discussed types of cancer treatment across borders, including state-sponsored, patient self-referral, oncologist referral, and the issues of solicitation of referrals. We also discussed African countries as host countries, the emerging phenomenon of African countries as destination countries, and foreign cancer facilities on African soil.
Research gaps identified include economic impact, trust in the system, financial toxicity, and the need to include fininacial toxicity from alternative medicine, which is emerging as a driver in medical tourism, pros and cons of being destination countries. We hope that the discussion and the research will continue.”
