Muna Al-Khaifi: Music-Based Interventions Show Significant Promise Psychological Well-Being of Breast Cancer Patients
Dr. Muna Al-Khaifi, lead of the Breast Cancer Survivorship Program at Odette Cancer Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I am pleased to see the publication of our systematic review published in the Journal of cancer Survivorship. Despite the advancements in treatment modalities for breast cancer, survivors frequently encounter persistent psychological challenges, including anxiety, depression, body image disturbances, and an overall diminished quality of life. In this context, art interventions – spanning various creative disciplines such as visual arts, music, dance, and poetry – have been identified as viable mechanisms to mitigate these issues.
Our systematic review critically assesses the efficacy of these artistic interventions in enhancing psychological outcomes among breast cancer survivors.
The findings suggest that visual art and music-based interventions show significant promise in improving psychological well-being and overall quality of life. Conversely, the variable outcomes associated with dance interventions and the limited data available on poetry interventions highlight a pressing need for further research to advance evidence-based practices in this.
As someone who has a deep passion for the arts, particularly music and dance, I have come to appreciate the profound impact these creative expressions have on overall well-being. Recognizing the therapeutic and uplifting qualities of music and dance.
I am happy that I conducted a systematic review exploring how these modalities influence mental, emotional, and physical health in breast cancer patients. Further research is necessary to assess how art enhances quality of life and fosters a sense of community and connection among cancer survivors. Thanks to our team and experts.”
