Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan on Barriers to Cancer Care in Displaced Populations in Africa

Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan, Associate Professor at the University of Gezira and Consultant in Clinical and Radiation Oncology at Universal Hospital, Sudan, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Perspectives of oncology professionals on cancer care for displaced populations in Africa.

Our latest research published as an online abstract for ASCO2026. This was a mixed-methods study explores the continuum of cancer care for displaced populations in Africa from the perspective of Oncology Care Professionals (OCPs).

While OCPs are on the front lines of this reality, they face a severe deficit in specialized training in providing Cancer Care to DisplacedPopulations alongside major Key barriers:

  • Socio-cultural, economic and psycho impact of displacement
  • Late-stage presentation
  • High pressure on services and funding shortages
  • Poor treatment adherence and referral challenges.

To improve outcomes for these vulnerable populations, we must prioritize specialized OCP training and actively bridge the cultural, financial, and service gaps.”

Iman Ahmed, Senior Consultant at Humanitarian and Development Services, shared a post by Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan, adding:

“We are pleased to share that our abstract has been published on the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)-2026 conference website.

Thanks to all co-authors from the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer Aortic Inc, Queen’s University and beyond, and thank you ASCO.

We look forward to sharing the full results of our study conducted last year 2025, titled: Perspectives of oncology professionals on cancer care for displaced populations in Africa.”
