Mina Sedrak, Director of Cancer and Aging Program and Associate Professor of Medicine at UCLA, shared on LinkedIn:
“Precision oncology has focused on the tumor. Is it time to put the patient at the center?
With Gabrielle Rocque and Ryan Nipp, we put together this figure in Journal of Clinical Oncology Oncology Practice to share our thoughts on where we are today and where we want to be in the future. Look at where the patient is in each panel.
- The tumor is at the center. The patient is off to the side.
- The patient moves to the middle. We add function, cognition, nutrition, social support, and patient-reported outcomes.
- The patient is at the center. Tumor biology is one part of the picture, along with aging biology, emotional and social health, environmental exposures, lifestyle, and the patient’s own goals, values, and preferences. AI can help us bring it all together.
This is whole-person precision oncology. This is where we need to go.
One thing stays the same in every panel: the team. Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology. Geriatric oncology and palliative care. Nursing, pharmacy, and primary care. Academic and community practices. No one can see the whole person alone. We have to do this together, as a multidisciplinary team. ‘Intentional Teams, Exceptional Care’ – Elizabeth Mittendorf.”
