Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive at Cancer Research UK (CRUK), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I’m delighted that the Tobacco and Vapes Act has become law. This legislation will help protect my son, daughter and everyone born on or after 1 January 2009 from a lifetime of addiction to tobacco.
For many years, working alongside our partners and our incredible volunteer campaigns ambassadors, we’ve been campaigning for a Smoke free UK and this new law is a huge step towards achieving that goal and creating the first ever smokefree generation.
By progressively raising the age of sale of tobacco across the whole of the UK, it is hoped that, by 2040, up to 10 million fewer cigarettes will be smoked each day. But we must also recognise that there are millions of people who already smoke who need support to quit and, that to turn this milestone into lasting change, this support that must be sustained, properly funded and focused on those who need it most.”
