Michael McNeil: Highlighting Asya Agulnik’s Impact Across Pediatric Cancer Care

Michael McNeil, Director of the St. Jude Global Palliative Care Program, shared on LinkedIn:

“This week as I train for the St. Jude Half Marathon, I am highlighting another of my colleagues I work with at St. Jude Global.

Asya Agulnik is a pediatric intensivist and implementation scientist and the Director of the St. Jude Global Critical Care program and the Regional Advisory Committee Chair for our Euro Regional Program. When she is not in the PICU caring for critically ill children with cancer she is thinking about the implementation and sustainability of interventions to improve the quality of care for hospitalized patients globally.

Her work in early warning scales for clinical deterioration has resulted in a tangible improvement in mortality across dozens of hospitals across multiple continents around the world.

On a personal note, she has also been a fierce advocate for me and my research. Several of my research initiatives have stemmed from initial conversations and collaborations with Dr. Agulnik and her team.

She has taught me about the power of implementation science and the rigorous studying of what we do, why we do it, and how to improve. She is one of my primary mentors on my grants and I continue learning from her everyday.

I am beyond grateful for Asya’s continued commitment to my success as a physician researcher. I love my regular meetings with her because I know that I will come away learning something new and about 10 new project ideas to explore!

If able, please consider donating to my fundraiser for the St. Jude Half Marathon so that Dr. Agulnik and other amazing researchers can continue their incredible clinical work and research.”
