Melyssa Bratton on Genomic Instability in Breast Cancer

“More than 20 years ago, my family and I moved to New Orleans, and that decision helped shape my passion for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) research.

TNBC disproportionately impacts Black women, who are diagnosed at nearly twice the rate of White women, and states across the Southeast, including Louisiana and Mississippi, continue to experience some of the highest TNBC incidence rates in the country.

Addressing those disparities is one of the reasons I wrote the grant that was recently funded. I’m driven by a desire to better understand why outcomes differ and how we can close those gaps.

I’m especially fascinated by the intersection of tumor biology, genetics, and treatment response. Understanding how genomic alterations influence outcomes, and whether those relationships differ across patient populations has become a major focus of my work.
