Matthew Iasiello: Making Space for Honest Conversations in Cancer Care

Matthew Iasiello, Head of Data and Research Translation at Be Well Co, shared on LinkedIn:

“Is it possible to live well with cancer?

This has been the focus of our MRFF study, and the topic of the latest episode of Researching Happy with my colleagues Natalie T. and AProf Hannah Wardill.

We cover a lot of the novel aspects of the project, the missing opportunity to improve mental wellbeing for people living with cancer, the balancing act choosing the ‘right’ methodology to convince decision makers but also to make sure we capture the flexible outcomes, and the learnings of multi-disciplinary teams.

Natalie shares her experience of conducting interviews of people living with multiple myeloma. She did not include a direct question about dying, yet many brought it up anyway.

Participants shared the feeling of loneliness, despite most of these people are surrounded by family who love them. The issue was that nobody seems to want to have the conversation with them. Family understandably want to keep things positive and steer away from it, but this include friends and clinicians too.

These findings have been published along with Xavier Symons who you will remember from a previous episode, specifically considering the missed opportunity for flourishing at end of life.”
