Mary Nyangasi-Onyango: Translating Knowledge Into Action in the Fight Against Cancer

Mary Nyangasi-Onyango, Technical Lead at WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Thrilled to share that I have successfully completed my MSc Transformative Oncology program from the University of Manchester!

The past three years have been an incredible journey, deepening my understanding of the complex intersection of cancer care, research, and policy. This program was truly transformative, focusing on areas critical to improving global cancer outcomes.

Key Program Highlights:

  • Translational Research: Gaining a robust perspective on bridging the gap between cutting-edge laboratory discoveries and clinical implementation.
  • Health Economicsand Policy: Developing expertise in assessing the cost-effectiveness of new treatments and formulating sustainable national cancer control strategies.
  • Implementation Science: how to effectively integrate evidence-based interventions including precision oncology into diverse global health settings, particularly in low-resource environments.
  • Digital Health in Oncology: Exploring the role of AI and big data in democratizing access to quality cancer care.

The strategic focus on global health equity and resource-sensitive implementation aligns perfectly with the WHO’s mission. I am more prepared to support development of evidence-based guidelines for resource-stratified cancer care, cancer research to practice and policies that ensure equitable access to life-saving oncology innovations worldwide.

A heartfelt thank you to my incredible support system- the brilliant faculty at the University of Manchester for their guidance and challenging insights, my wonderful colleagues – your passion inspires me every day, and I look forward to applying this new knowledge alongside you. And, most importantly, deepest gratitude to my friends and family- particularly my husband and daughters to whom I dedicate this degree for their unwavering encouragement, patience, and belief in this ambitious three-year commitment.

Here’s to translating knowledge into action and contributing little by little, a step at a time to the fight against cancer! Onwards!”
