Maria Babak, Head of The Babak Lab and Assistant Professor at City University of Hong Kong, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I am very happy to announce that on the 1st of July I was promoted to tenured Associate Professor at City University of Hong Kong.

Reaching this milestone would not have been possible without the incredible support of many people and I would like to express my deepest gratitude to them.

To all my lab members, past and present – thank you for your hard work and dedication! I am especially grateful to Jemma Arakelyan, MD, PhD, my very first Ph.D. student and the first doctor to graduate from the lab, who showed me how hardworking, motivated and passionate research students can be.

I am deeply grateful to my mentors, Prof. Wee Han Ang and Prof. Shirish Shenolikar – your advice and encouragement in moments of despair kept me going! I truly could not have done this without you.

I am equally grateful to my wonderful colleagues at CityUHK, especially Prof. Guangyu Zhu, Prof. Chung Sing Lee, Prof. Michael Chan, Prof. Siu Gin Cheung, Prof. Xin Wang, Prof. Vincent Ko, Prof. Kenneth Kam-Wing Lo, Prof. Kenneth M. Y. Leung, BBS, JP and Prof. Andrey Rogach for their warm welcome and continuous mentorship over the years.

My big thanks also goes to Prof. Hongzhe Sun and Prof. Chi-Ming Che at HKU, whose research I deeply admire and whom I look up to as exemplary scientists.

My gratitude also goes to my overseas colleagues and friends, especially Prof. Angela Casini, Prof. Gilles Gasser, Prof. Maria Contel, Prof. Clotilde Policar, Prof. Zijian Guo, Prof. Angelo Frei, Prof. Johannes Karges, Prof. Sanja Grguric-Sipka, Prof. Alexey Nazarov, Prof. Dani Gibson, Prof. Ingo Ott, Prof. Luiz Antônio Costa, Prof. Maribel Navarro, Prof. Matthew Sullivan, Prof. Muhammad Hanif, Prof. Walter Berger, Prof. Petra Heffeter and many many more for their friendship and inspiration.

On a personal note, I thank my husband and my son for filling my life with joy, lightening the difficult days and amplifying the happy ones. Finally, and most importantly, I dedicate this achievement to my mother, my best friend, who was really waiting for this day. I wish with all my heart that she could be here to share this moment with me.”
