Lauren Henke Discusses Proton vs Photon Therapy Results in HCC

Lauren Henke, Director of GI & Adaptive Radiotherapy at UH Seidman Cancer Center, shared on X:

“Next up, Team GI’s Ted Hong discussing NRG-GI003 results of photons vs protons for HCC!

Hypothesis: protons could reduce liver decomp and improve OS, the primary endpoint. This was based on data from preceding work published by Niu Sanford, showing potential gains with protons.”

Nina Niu Sanford, Assistant Professor and Chief of Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology at Harvard/Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital, added:

“Curious to see if results change guidelines and practice patterns re protons in HCC.

GI003 showed dosimetric but no clinical benefit with protons, and some trends even favored photons.

RT technology RCTs very difficult to conduct, so need to understand if/how evidence shapes utilization.”
