Johanna Joyce, President of the European Association for Cancer Research, shared on LinkedIn:
“Europe’s share of global oncology clinical trials has fallen from 41% in 2008 to just 21% in 2023.
This is a very concerning trend, and one that demands urgent action.
A new report from the European Cancer Organisation, highlighted this week in The Lancet Oncology, sets out both the challenges facing cancer research in Europe and important recommendations for reversing this decline.
I was pleased to contribute here with the perspective of the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR), alongside Isabel Rubio, President of the European Cancer Organisation, and Michael Baumann, President of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences.
Europe has exceptional strengths in cancer research, but we cannot take these for granted. We urgently need greater investment across the entire research continuum, from fundamental discovery through translational research to clinical trials, alongside reduced regulatory barriers, stronger cross-border collaboration, and sustained support for our researchers and clinicians.
As President of the EACR, I welcome the call for a coordinated European strategy for cancer research and innovation. We are committed to working with our partners to ensure that scientific discoveries translate into meaningful advances for patients.”
