Joanna Metzner-Sadurski: Oncology101 is Excited to Collaborate With CCI and TeleOncology Hub

Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, Medical Doctor at Self Regional Healthcare and Executive Director of Oncology101.org, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“At Oncology101.org, we are honored and excited to collaborate with Cancer Consciousness Initiative (CCI) Abuja and the TeleOncology Hub, led by Hannatu Ayuba, to advance cancer health literacy in Nigeria and beyond.

Our mission at Oncology101.org is to make cancer understandable through physician-led, evidence-based education developed using NIH health literacy principles. Together with our partners, we will work to translate these educational resources into local Nigerian languages, helping patients and families better understand cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials, medications, and treatment-related side effects.

This collaboration goes beyond translation. By working with CCI and TeleOncology Hub, we hope to reach underserved communities through community patient navigators, tele-oncology services, local radio messaging, and culturally appropriate educational initiatives that address myths, reduce stigma, and empower patients to seek timely, evidence-based care.

Stories from community navigators remind us why this work is so important. Misconceptions surrounding cancer remain common, and many patients still do not receive appropriate pathology evaluation after surgery because of limited awareness and access. Health literacy can change outcomes by helping communities understand the importance of early diagnosis, pathology, and multidisciplinary cancer care.

We are equally committed to ensuring that these educational resources are accessible to individuals with disabilities, including members of the Deaf and hearing-impaired community, because every patient deserves access to understandable, trustworthy health information.

We are grateful to Hannatu Ayuba at the Cancer Consciousness Initiative, TeleOncology Hub, and all of their dedicated community health workers and patient navigators for their extraordinary commitment to equitable cancer care. Together, we hope to create educational resources that speak to patients in their own languages, respect their cultures, and empower them with knowledge that can save lives.

This is only the beginning of what we believe will be a meaningful partnership to improve cancer education and health equity across underserved communities.”
