“World leaders adopt historic global declaration on non-communicable diseases and mental health.
At the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, world leaders adopted a political declaration to address noncommunicable diseases and mental health challenges through a fully integrated approach
The declaration is the result of intergovernmental negotiations ahead of the 4th High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the Promotion of Mental Health and Well-being, held on 25 September 2025, which was before the General Assembly
Entitled ‘Equity and integration: Transforming life conditions and Livelihoods with leadership and Leadership on Noncommunicable Diseases and the promotion of Mental Health and Well-Being’, this political declaration is the first of its kind addressing both noncommunicable diseases and mental health, and it represents a unique opportunity to accelerate progress on a global scale towards achieving a set of specific global goals by 2030
This declaration is expected to usher in a new era in tackling some of the world’s most pressing #health issues that affect people of all ages and at all levels of income globally
Noncommunicable diseases, which are currently the leading causes of mortality, cause 18 million premature deaths each year, while mental disorders affect more than a billion people worldwide
Noncommunicable diseases are often promoted by avoidable risk factors such as poor diet, smoking, alcohol use, physical inactivity, and air pollution, many of which also have a negative impact on mental health
Noncommunicable diseases and mental disorders are on the rise in all countries and affect all communities. This makes them crucial issues not only for public health, but also for sustainable economic productivity and growth
A new era and measurable goals
The new declaration, which represents a significant evolution compared to previous commitments, sets 3 first global goals to be achieved by 2030:
- 150 million fewer people are consuming tobacco,
- 150 million more people who are in control of their hypertension
- 150 million more people have access to mental health services.”
