Ilyas Sahin: Should Inherited Genetic Testing Be Offered to Everyone Diagnosed with Cancer?

Ilyas Sahin, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, shared on X:

“Should inherited genetic testing be offered to everyone diagnosed with cancer?

A new Cancer Discovery study tested 39,184 patients across 32 solid tumor types. Overall, 16.3% carried a pathogenic germline variant.

Using age 50 alone as the cutoff would have missed 72% of carriers. Even among late-onset cancers, 12.3% had a pathogenic variant, including 5.1% in high- or moderate-penetrance genes.

The question may no longer be whether we will find these variants, but how to make testing actionable, accessible, and affordable.”
