“New in Journal of Clinical Oncology: the phase 3 ROADS trial tested cesium-131 tiles (small radioactive implants that deliver radiation directly to the surgical cavity) after resection of a brain metastasis, instead of waiting for postoperative stereotactic radiation.
- 1-year surgical-site recurrence: 1.3% vs 15.4%
- Median overall survival: 42.5 vs 17.6 months
Side effects were similar.
The survival difference is striking, but OS was a secondary endpoint and follow-up was still relatively short, so it needs confirmation.
Still, potentially practice-changing for selected resectable brain metastases.”
