Hussain Abdulla: BCS vs. Mastectomy in Multifocal Breast Cancer

Hussain Abdulla, Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon at Bahrain Government Hospitals, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“New publication!

This paper addresses one of the most controversial and debatable topics in breast surgical oncology: BCS versus mastectomy for multifocal/multicentric tumors.

Key findings in ~30,000 patients:

  • No significant differences in local recurrence, locoregional recurrence, distant recurrence or disease-free survival between BCS and mastectomy
  • Improved overall survival with BCS

Our findings support the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and St.Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference recommendations, provided negative margins are achieved and radiotherapy is given.

This work adds to the growing body of evidence supporting that breast conservation may confer a survival benefit over mastectomy in appropriately selected patients and highlights the important role of oncoplastic surgery in expanding the feasibility of BCS while maintaining oncological safety.”
