Hesham ElGhazaly, Professor of Clinical Oncology at Ain Shams University and President of the Executive Board of the Egyptian Cancer Society, shared on LinkedIn:
“In an important step towards promoting applied scientific research in the field of liver oncology.
I was pleased to participate in the inauguration of the Liver Cancer Research Center at the Center of Excellence for Medical Research of the National Research Center, accompanied by Dr. Mamdouh Awad, President of the National Research Center and Acting President of the Academy of Scientific Research, and Dr. Mohamed Hassani, Assistant Minister of Health, Dr. Mohamed Abdullah, Executive Director of the National Committee for Liver Oncology, Dr. Ashraf Omar, President of the Liver Cancer Society, and a group of senior professors of liver and gastrointestinal oncology.

The launch of the center represents a qualitative addition to the liver cancer research system in Egypt, especially in the fields of revention, early detection, genetic research, molecular, and clinical research, supporting the transition from research to application and improving patient outcomes.
During the meeting, we discussed a number of important research issues that should form part of the liver cancer research agenda over the next five years.
Among them: the importance of obtaining a tissue sample of the tumor in appropriate and safe cases, to study the biology of the tumor, its genetic and immune characteristics, and to provide greater opportunities for molecular and immunotyping.
Local manufacturer and regional support for essential medicines, diagnostics, and supportive care products, reducing cost and improving access to treatment, developing low-cost means of early detection and practical follow-up programs for the most vulnerable groups, employing artificial intelligence and digital health in radiology analysis, identifying risks, improving referral and diagnostic pathways, expanding research on modern therapies, especially immunotherapy, with a focus on real-world outcomes, toxicity, cost, and economic viability.
The event witnessed rich discussions with the participation of a group of experts, including Dr. Jamal Esmat, Dr. Imam Waked, Dr. Mohamed Kamal Shaker, on the most prominent challenges facing liver cancer care in Egypt, and the need to strengthen cooperation between research centers, the Ministry of Health, and university hospitals, and work on building a national network for liver cancer research to exchange data and experiences, and unify efforts from various sectors.”
