Hesham ElGhazaly, Elected President of the Executive Board at Egyptian Cancer Society, Professor of Clinical Oncology at Ain Shams University, and the Founder and CEO of Alfa Cure Oncology Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“One of the core goals of the Egyptian Cancer Society (ECS) has always been to build strong, meaningful collaborations with leading international societies such as ours with American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) we are deeply proud of our continued alignment and growing partnership through the years, this time during ASCO annual meeting in Chicago we had the pleasure to co-host the (ASCO–ECS Collaborative Strategic Dialogue on Cancer Control, Research, and Capacity Building in EMRO and Africa) on June 1, 2026.
The session was inspiring, with exceptional engagement and thoughtful interaction from colleagues across the EMRO region, Africa, and the United States.
We were particularly honored by the presence and valuable contributions of Elizabeth Mittendorf, ASCO President; Zainab Shinkafi–Bagudu, UICC President-Elect; and Cesaltina Lorenzoni, President of AORTIC, Lynn Schuchter, ASCO Past President and Douglas Pyle Vice, President of ASCO’s Center for global impact, Partha Basu, head of early detection, prevention and infections in IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization, Jasmine Kamboj, MD, FASCO whose leadership and perspectives greatly enriched the dialogue.
The session was further strengthened by the participation of esteemed oncologists from Algeria, KSA, Jordan, Syria, Sudan, Lebanon, Egypt, Türkiye and USA : Pr Adda Bounedjar, Atlal Abusanad, MBBS, MSc, ABIM, FRCPC, CIP, Prof. Khaled elSaleh, Prof. Nagi El Saghir, Prof. Hikmat Abdel-Razeq, Alper Sevinç, Abdul Rahman Jazieh, MD, MPH, FACP, FASCO, MD, MPH, FACP, FASCO , Tamer Refaat, MD PhD MSCI, Professor Nagla Karim, MD,PhD, Dr. Noha Srour, Mohammed Jaloudi, Prof. Ola Khorshid, MD PhD, Prof. Lobna Sedky, Dr. Khaled Abdelaziz Kamal.
What made this dialogue particularly powerful was not only it’s rich presentations, but also the open discussion and real-time survey feedback. These conversations highlighted our shared regional realities: tangible progress in clinicaltrials enrollment over the past decade, alongside persistent challenges related to funding, regulatory barriers, and limited collaborative research infrastructure. This honest exchange reinforced the need for structured mentorship programs and sustainable, cross-border research networks across different fields of cancer care.
My sincere thanks go to my colleagues at ECS and ASCO for their dedication in organizing this session, and to all participants for their active engagement and valuable contributions. we also celebrated the growing numbers of ASCO members from EMRO region and Africa up to 4000 members making it a step to empower the international collaboration and showing the shared commitment toward research development.
We look forward to building on this momentum together.”
