Hannah Wardill: Standardizing Mucositis Assessment to Improve Supportive Cancer Care

Hannah Wardill, Lead at Supportive Oncology Research Group (SORG), Research Fellow at Adelaide University, shared on LinkedIn:

How can we improve mucositis care if we aren’t measuring mucositis consistently?

It sounds like a relatively simple problem, but it has important consequences.
Across clinical practice and research, mucositis is assessed using a wide range of tools, approaches and endpoints.

That variability makes it harder to compare studies, combine evidence and ultimately translate research into better supportive care.

Through the The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Mucositis Study Group and International Society Oral Oncology (ISOO), we brought together international expertise to ask a practical question:

when, where and how should existing mucositis assessment tools actually be used?

The result is a set of consensus recommendations covering oral and gastrointestinal mucositis across clinical practice and clinical trials, including guidance on both clinician-assessed measures and patient-reported outcomes.

For me, one of the important messages from this work is that standardising how we measure toxicity is not just a methodological exercise. Better measurement gives us better evidence, and better evidence gives us a stronger foundation for improving care.”
