Filipe Coutinho, Medical Oncologist at Unidade Local de Saúde Médio Ave, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I had the pleasure of participating as an examiner in the defense of the dissertation of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Medicine of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Universidade da Beira Interior, entitled ‘What are the psychological and emotional strategies used by family members to deal with the suffering of their loved ones in Palliative Care?’
In Palliative Care, care is not just about relieving symptoms. It is also to recognize the impact of the disease on the family, caregivers and all those who accompany the sick person in moments of greater vulnerability.
This theme reminded us that:
- the family also suffers
- the caregiver also needs to be listened to
- psychological support should be part of the clinical approach
- communication, presence and dignity are essential dimensions of care
As an oncologist and palliative care physician, this reflection is deeply linked to my clinical practice.
As a lecturer, as a guest assistant at FCS-UBI, it was particularly gratifying to analyse an academic work that brings medical training closer to the more human dimension of medicine.
Congratulations to Catarina for choosing such a pertinent, current and necessary theme.
May we continue to train doctors who are technically competent, but also capable of recognizing the suffering that often remains silent: in the sick person and in his or her family.”
