Evis Sala: Four Key Reflections From the AI in Health Summit 2026

Evis Sala, President of the European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR), shared on LinkedIn:

“Are we moving too slowly in adopting AI, or too slowly in transforming healthcare systems to make AI effective?

A stimulating discussion at The Economist’s AI in Health Summit 2026 in London, with four key reflections:

  • From innovation to implementation. Healthcare does not lack AI tools. It lacks integration, validation and implementation at scale. The next breakthrough is not another intelligent algorithm, but an intelligent patient pathway.
  • From AI performance to real-world impact. We must move beyond accuracy and AUC to measure what truly matters: better patient outcomes, clinical efficiency, equitable access and health-system sustainability.
  • Governance must enable innovation, not hinder it. Responsible adoption requires continuous monitoring, accountability and proportionate regulation. But we must also recognise the cost of inaction — the harm caused by delaying effective technologies.
  • AI transformation is health-system transformation. Governments and healthcare leaders must invest in interoperable data infrastructure, workforce development and organisational change, ensuring AI benefits everyone, not just the most privileged.

Ultimately, the future of medicine is not about humans versus AI, but about using better technology to make us better clinicians — with more time for judgement, explanation and human attention.

Thank you to Natasha Loder, my fellow panellists and The Economist for a thought-provoking discussion!”
