What is it?
This is a comprehensive training programme regarding the medicines’ development process. It spans the entire lifecycle of medicines research and development (RandD), from the initial design and execution of research projects and clinical trials to regulatory processes and Health Technology Assessment (HTA).
The programme aims to provide a thorough understanding of the RandD process and the patient’s role within it, building capacity for patients to take an active role in collaboration with other stakeholders. Graduates are recognised as EUPATI Fellows, a title that certifies their knowledge and identifies them as expert patients.
What will participants learn?
Participants will gain expertise in ethical principles, pharmacovigilance, benefit-risk assessment, and the communication of safety issues. The curriculum also includes the critical reading of scientific publications, statistics, clinical trial protocols, the regulatory environment, and the practical application of HTA. Something important is that this program is open to any patient advocate; it doesn’t have to be about oncology, so you will learn about other advocates in different fields.

The programme is specifically designed for patients, patient representatives, and carers who wish to professionalise their advocacy, though it remains open to any individual interested in medicines RandD.

Geographic eligibility
- Global (EUPATI has 24 National Platforms across Europe and worldwide).
Format
- Hybrid (A blended approach consisting of 6 online modules with 28 courses total, one virtual event, and one in-person event).
Duration
- 12–14 months.
Cost
- Paid: There is an advance payment of €270 for the online courses plus a €160 catering fee for the in-person event. Total (430 euros + hotel and flight tickets for the in-person event)
- Note: Non-patients affiliated with industry or working as independent consultants must pay an additional fee of €500.
Scholarships available?
- Yes (Limited financial support is available to cover travel, catering fee and accommodation for the in-person event for patients and carers who can prove economic need)
