Grateful to Hora Sediso Tashite for Advancing Cancer Care in Ethiopia – ESHO

Ethiopian Society of Hematology and Oncology-ESHO shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A Moment We Will Not Forget, We experienced a moment that deeply touched everyone in the room.

Dr. Hora Sediso Tashite, consultant internist and Clinical Services Director at the Oromia Regional Health Bureau, stood and shared his personal story of facing cancer.

As he spoke, the room became very quiet. People were emotional. Some had tears in their eyes. It was not a presentation or a speech, it was a human story that everyone could feel.

He spoke as a doctor, as a leader, and also as a cancer survivor. That combination made his words even more powerful. It reminded all of us that behind every patient is a story, and sometimes those stories belong to the people who are also leading the system.

In his work in Oromia, he has been trying to strengthen cancer care in very practical ways, organizing people, improving coordination, and pushing forward the cancer control plans so they can actually work on the ground. He has also been strongly engaged in prevention efforts like hepatitis B, which is so important in reducing future cancer cases.

But on that day, none of that felt like just policy or systems. It felt personal.

What stayed with us most was not his position or his plans, but his courage to speak openly about his journey, and the honesty in his voice when he shared it.

It reminded us why this work matters. Not just because of systems or strategies, but because of people, families, and lives.

We are truly grateful to Dr. Hora Sediso Tashite for his honesty, his strength, and his continued commitment to improving cancer care in Ethiopia.”
