Caroline Chukwu: Understanding Cancer-Related Pain and Approaches to Its Management With ACAN

Caroline Chukwu, Director of South-South Region at ONS- Nigeria, shared on LinkedIn:

“Cancer care must go beyond treating the disease. It must also address the pain people live with.

Today, Acetrea Cancer Advocacy Network ( ACAN) hosted an important conversation on Beyond Morphine: Managing Cancer-Related Pain with Interventional Therapies, featuring Dr. Adeniyi Ogundipe, Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Physician.

With over 100 participants, the session explored an aspect of cancer care that deserves greater attention: understanding cancer-related pain and the range of approaches available to manage it.

One message stood out to me: effective pain management is not just about reducing pain intensity. It is about improving quality of life, preserving dignity and helping people live as comfortably and independently as possible.

Cancer care is multidisciplinary, and pain management should be no different.

My appreciation goes to Dr. Adeniyi Ogundipe for sharing his expertise and to everyone who joined the conversation.

At Acetrea Cancer Advocacy Network (ACAN), we believe that informed patients are better positioned to participate in their care, ask meaningful questions and seek appropriate support. Because quality cancer care must address not only the disease, but also the experience of the person living with it.

Building on Caroline Chukwu’s reflections, ACAN also shared its perspective on the webinar, highlighting key takeaways on cancer pain management and the importance of compassionate, individualised care:

“ACAN’s Reflection on Today’s Webinar

Cancer pain deserves more attention in conversations about quality cancer care.

Today, the Acetrea Cancer Advocacy Network (ACAN) hosted Beyond Morphine: Managing Cancer-Related Pain with Interventional Therapies, featuring Dr. Adeniyi Ogundipe, Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Physician.

With over 100 participants, the webinar explored the causes of cancer-related pain, approaches to pain management, and the role of interventional therapies in relieving pain when appropriate.

One key takeaway was that effective cancer pain management goes beyond medication. It requires individualised care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and attention to how pain affects a person’s daily life and overall well-being.

For patients and caregivers, understanding that different approaches to pain management exist can be an important step towards seeking appropriate care and asking informed questions.

At ACAN, we recognise that cancer advocacy must extend beyond awareness and early detection to include the experiences of people living with cancer, including those navigating pain during and after treatment.

We appreciate Dr. Adeniyi Ogundipe for sharing his expertise and everyone who participated in this important conversation.

Our commitment remains clear: to promote informed decisions, compassionate support, and better experiences for people affected by cancer. Because quality cancer care should not only focus on treating the disease, but also on relieving suffering and improving quality of life.”
